During the last 150 years, winter storms have caused great damage to Swiss forests. A dissertation written in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and now supported by the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland) confirms that Lothar, the storm that hit Switzerland in 1999, caused considerably more damage than any other storm that have occurred over more than a century. Looking to the future, it is difficult to predict where storms will strike and how intense they will be. One thing, however, is certain: there will be more storms and they may cause even more damage.
