This story concerns new research examining the stocks of Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs). Despite their reputation for being low-risk, and fairly robust during periods of economic downturn, the researchers found that the performance of REIT stocks varied considerably, depending on various characteristics of the company itself. In particular, the study suggests that leverage can be an accurate predictor of whether REIT stocks will prove more or less resilient during periods of downturn.
