24/04/2017 — 26/04/2017,
In the UK and across the globe, biodiversity is changing at an alarming rate. We are losing genetic, species and habitat diversity by conversion of land for food production and development, over-exploitation of natural resources, pollution and the introduction of invasive species. How these changes are affecting the ecosystem services on which our physical and mental health and well-being depend are only just becoming clear. This symposium – Advances in Biodiversity & Ecosystem Services – presents novel and cutting-edge science on which future policy depends. It will include results from NERC’s 6-year, £15m, BESS (Biodiversity and Ecosystem Service Sustainability) programme, and bring together ecologists from the UK, Europe and North America. Highlights include new ways of putting a price on the aesthetic value of birds and measuring the nature doses we need for our health and well-being. The symposium is organised by the British Ecological Society and BESS.
